I've never tried this, but my friend who volunteers for the Humane Society says it does work. However, you are much better off with a pet carrier, and this one is a good size for all but the largest of cats (I go up one size for my 30 lb. Maine Coon).
Another good feature of this particular carrier, is that you can take it apart at the vet's if your cat refuses to come out. You might be surprised at how difficult it is to budge a cat who has all four feet braced against the inside of the carrier.
I recommend getting one Kennel Cab per pet just in case you have an emergency, such as a pending hurricane or fire, and have to move all of your animals at once. This model is easy to stack, and easy to clean.
